Effective Time Management for Teens

If you are like most teens, the demands on your time continue to grow. You are faced with harder classes, more extracurricular activities, and part time jobs—but you know what doesn’t grow? The number of hours in the day!

So, you might be at your wits end because there just isn’t enough time in the day to do that Calculus packet, to work at your job, and to balance that blossoming social life.

But that feeling of being overwhelmed ends today—with these tips you’ll learn how to effectively manage your time as a teen.

Create a Schedule

Effective time management for teens begins and ends with good scheduling.

At the beginning of each week, creating a schedule that maps out all major projects and time commitments that week is the number one tool to mastering time management as a teen.

Some tips on drafting your schedule:

  • Put the more time consuming projects higher up on the list in order to get them out of the way earlier.
  • Put time limits on projects and commitments whenever possible.
  • Projects typically take 25% more time to complete than we think – so budget extra time into each commitment as a buffer.

Take Advantage of Every Second

You’d be surprised how often after school extracurricular activities don’t start on time. Instead of using that 10 minute window to scroll through Instagram or take more selfies, use those extra minutes to do some school reading, homework prep, or to knock out quick assignments!

By knocking out some reading during your unexpected downtime you’ll save time in the long run.

Don’t be Afraid to Say No

No one ever likes to say no to movie nights or dinner plans but part of growing up is learning to make the tough decisions.

So, if you know that you have to study for a test tomorrow or have mountains of homework that night, skipping out on a friend’s night might be the best option.  Trust me, your friends will understand. To make it up to your friends, you might plan a time that works for everyone to head out to the movies (be sure to add it to your schedule!).

Find Your Productive Time

Effective time management for teens can be made easier if you can acknowledge and find the times where you work the best.

Whether your are a night owl or more of an early-bird-gets-the-worm kind of person, find the time you are most productive and crack through your to do list during that time! You’ll find that you are more efficient at getting through your work this way and work better when you are operating on all cylinders.

Other Tips:

  • Get enough sleep
  • Create dedicated study times
  • Give yourself rewards for finishing tasks
