Easy Ways Of Identifying Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

Intro

In an oxidation reaction, the change in charge will increase.
Example:
Iron turns to Fe(II) ion
Fe→ Fe(2+)+ 2e
Only Reducing agent will undergo oxidation.
In a Reduction reaction a reactant will decrease in charge.
Example:
Fe(2+)+ 2e → Fe
Fe(II) ion turns to Fe atom.
Only Oxidizing agent will undergo reduction.
NOTE:Both oxidation occurs at the expense of reduction and vice versa. That is, both oxidation and reduction go hand in hand.

Sample Problem

Some more oxidation reactions:
Ni(II) → Ni(III)+ e
Nickel 2+ ion to Nickel 3+ ion

Some more reduction reactions:
Cl + e→Cl- (from 0 to -1)
Chlorine atom to chloride ion
O+2e→O2- (from 0 to -2)
Oxygen atom to oxide ion
