How many does everyone get?

John is throwing a birthday party and inviting his friends. His mother is buying cupcakes that come in packs of 12.

Sample Problem

If John has 18 friends coming to his party, how many packages should his mother get?

Looking at this problem, you see that John has 18 friends coming to his party. To figure out how many packages are needed, you need to find out if there will be more or less people coming than there are cupcakes. As you can see 12 is less than 18, so you will need more than one package. If you subtract 12 from 18, you will get the amount of packages you still need. Because 6 is less than 12, you only need one more package. That making it a total of 2 packages John’s mom needs to get.
