Organizing An Essay

You have to write an essay. Its due date is coming up or it’s just been assigned–either way, it needs to get written. The first step is to gather up what you want to say. The second step is to organize it. So how do you organize an essay? It’s easier than you think. All you need is to know, or have an idea of, what you want to say, to know the requirements for the essay, and then to put it down on a sheet of paper. Then, it’s time to organize.

Sample Problem

For example, let’s say you have an essay due that you have to write about cows. It’s an opinion piece, which means you need an opinion. The first thing you write down is how you feel about hows. In your next line, write down an issue. The next, write down possible ways to solve this issue. Maybe the cows are sick. Why are they sick? What’s caused them to be this way? Once you’ve gotten that written down, and you’ve written down everything you’ll want to talk about in the essay, it’s time to move on to the next part.

Organization! So, here’s where things get good. You’ve started off with this:
Essay Requirements: Two pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman font, 12 point.
Statement/opinion: Cows are great creatures essential to human life.
Issue: Cows are getting sick.
Why?: Why are cows sick? They’re sick because…
Ways to Solve the problem: You can fix cows from being sick by…

Now, when writing the essay you’ll want to organize it according to this list. For your first paragraph, write about your statement, the issue, and give an idea as to how you plan to fix things. In the next paragraph, write about the issue itself. Give it context. In the next paragraph, write about the why. Why is this important? What’s making them sick? Finally, in the next paragraph, write about your ways to solve this issue.

Once you’ve done all that, you’ll need to write a final paragraph that sums up everything you’ve mentioned. This is an easy way to organize your essays to keep them neat! 🙂
