A war usually divided into 3 periods, between rival Greek city-states Athens and Sparta occurring from 431 – 404 B.C.

IN the beginning it was Athens that initiated naval attacks on Sparta-protected neighboring cities. Athens took advantage of its naval superiority. Sparta finally won the war by destroying the Athenian navy (with the assistance of the Persian navy).
