Polite Phrases

Intro

There are certain basic phrases that you just can’t live without, and the literal translations of each component word give us hints to their meanings:
你好 (Nǐ hǎo) You good
谢谢 (xièxiè) Thank thank
不客气 (bù kèqì) Don’t be polite
再见 (zàijiàn) Meet again

Sample Problem

Match the Chinese phrase to what you think it means in English based on its literal translation:
谢谢 Hello
你好 Goodbye
再见 You’re welcome
不客气 Thanks

Solution

谢谢 (xièxiè) “Thank thank” = Thank you
你好 (nǐ hǎo) “You good” = Hello
再见 (zàijiàn) “Meet again” = Goodbye
不客气 (bù kèqì) “Don’t be polite” = You’re welcome

Compound words in Chinese often will give hints as to their meaning through the literal meanings of each word in the compound; keep this in mind as you learn more vocabulary.
