## Pre-Algebra Tutorial

*Systems of Equations*

#### Sample Problem

#### Solution

There are a couple of ways to approach this problem, but I will show you two ways.

One way:

2x+4y=10

x+y=3

-x -x

y=3-x

2x+4(3-x)=10

2x+12-4x=10

-2x+12=10

-12 -12

____________

-2x=-2

x=1

Second way:

2x+4y=10

-4(x+y=3)—-> -4x-4y=-12

2x+4y=10

+

-4x-4y=-12

_______________

-2x=-2

x=1

If there needs to be a substitution to check your answer, then you can do so. If there is no case for a substitution, then you can decide if you need to check your answer to match the computation.
