Elementary Math (K-6th) Tutorial
Understanding Basic Multiplication
In this tutorial, we will discover how multiplication works and how to multiply numbers.
What is 4×6?
Step One: How does Multiplication Work?
Multiplication is an easier way to add numbers. Instead of saying 2+2+2+2+2, we can say 2×5 and get the same answer. Isn’t that crazy? Let me show you how it works.
When you multiply numbers, you are adding the number as many times as the number to which you are multiplying. That means, if you are multiplying 2 times 5, you are actually adding 2+2+2+2+2 OR you can add 5+5 and get the same answer.
Step Two: Multiplying the Problem
The question wants us to multiply 4 and 6.
To do this, we can add 4+4+4+4+4+4
We can add 6+6+6+6
What does that add up to be? If you got 24, you are right!
The best way to learn your multiplication tables is by practicing! Ask your parents to print off a practice sheet and see how fast you can get! Links to practice sheets are provided at the bottom of this tutorial.
