Lover Of Learning
“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited.” Plutarch
I am a lifelong lover of learning. Although my academic endeavors were not always easy, I developed a satisfaction in working hard and meeting my challenges head-on. As a child, "school" was difficult for me. I had to work so hard to make passing grades, though exemplary grades were made by others with only the most minimal of effort. It was those inspired teachers that taught me to take pride in my hard work, which influenced and encouraged my early successes. In college, I found tutors to be my best allies. Eventually, I also became a tutor. I trained and worked with those students who had great difficulty and need of constant review and practice. Their successes fueled me to never give up, especially if it was hard.
I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher. In my heart, I knew that my love for reading and hunger for learning had to be used to influence children, my other passion. When I walked into my first classroom (2nd grade bilingual), I fell in love with the little faces that stared back at me. Soon, my love for knowledge started to be contagious. Library day was the highlight of the week for my little ones, not a dreaded activity.
I went on three years later to pursue a Master's degree as an Educational Diagnostician. What inspired it? A student of mine, who worked hard, had great difficulty and couldn't seem to acquire the basic reading skills I was teaching. I sought testing and help for him with the special education department of our district. They told me he was struggling because English was not his first language. I knew better, but had no way to prove it. Many years later, as I work with children who have a disability, I am able to prove the influences of second language acquisition verses a learning disability.
During my time in college, as a teacher, and then as an Educational Diagnostician, I have continued to tutor children. This keeps me grounded and in contact with the latest and greatest happenings in classrooms today. It has also continued to fuel my love for learning.
