Working with children and young adults has been a long standing passion of mine. I am intrigued by how they see the world and experience new things. My passion was further ignited about six years ago in Chicago, when I began working with children with special needs. I worked primarily with young children with Down Syndrome (through Gigi’s Playhouse), as a reading tutor. I also worked one-on-one with a high school student with severe autism. My time with these children opened a door to another chapter in my life, one I am excited to continue building.
Shortly after moving back to the D.C. area, I decided to pursue a master’s in Early Childhood Special Education. I had always considered teaching as a career and felt confident working toward the dual degree of early childhood education and special education, combining my love of working with children and my strong desire to help others. Over the course of my program, I realized that I would potentially be more helpful outside of a classroom. Though my course shifted slightly, my desire to work with children and help them to the fullest extent possible never wavered.
There are only so many hours in a school day and a limit to the time and energy a teacher has. In order to provide necessary supports and approach academics in an effective way for each child, we need as much information as possible. Working one-on-one with a child provides valuable information about him or her, not only as a student, but as a little human filled with potential.
I am passionate about helping students develop their reading and writing skills as their confidence grows. I am also available to assist with college application assistance and work on college essays. With a strong background in admissions, on the primary, secondary and college levels, I am able to apply my knowledge to help develop a strong, well-rounded application.
