Test Prep (SSAT, ISEE, SAT, AP, Etc.) Classics, Science, Writing Tutor

Hi! My name is Isabella Garcia and I am a soon to be graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. I am taking this school year off in order to work in a lab at UNCC on my entry for the Intel Science Fair. Over the summer I worked with Dr. Kim at Stanford University on the regulatory pathways of fruit flies in hopes of finding a cure for both type I and type II diabetes and I hope to continue my research with him as an undergraduate student at Stanford after I graduate high school. After college, I hope to get an M.D. and a masters in public health and then become an epidemiologist.

Speaking personally, the most frustrating thing for me is when I don't understand something. Therefore, the most exciting thing for me to experience is when something clicks for me and that lightbulb lights up. I love tutoring because I think its so cool and rewarding to see others experience this as well.

When I arrived at Exeter, I was faced with brilliant people, an insane workload, and the realization that the unofficial motto "Harvard or bust" was no joke. It was here I figured out how to speed read, manage my time and consequently strong organizational skills, and how to figure out seemingly impossible math problems. At the beginning of my 10th grade year, I suffered a traumatic brain injury that forced me to learn how to talk, write, and concentrate again. After taking a year off to recover, I came back to school only to realize the strategies I had previously used to make my academics successful no longer worked for me and I was struggling. By the time winter rolled around, I had figured out the techniques my new brain needed to be successful and scored a 1570 on the SAT, proving to myself that my new strategies were successful.

On the note of my SAT score, I have done extensive research, studying, creating resources, and developing strategies for success on various standardized tests, all of which I would be happy to share. I scored in the 97% on the SSAT, an 8-9 on all ISEE sections, 780+ on all SAT subject tests taken, and 5s on all AP tests taken. I tutored my little brothers for the SSAT and they all scored >90%, as well as friends for the SAT and ACT, all of which surpassed their target scores. I have experience tutoring all grade levels (K-12), including kids with learning disabilities and gifted students. I can tutor any of the core subjects and the classics (through AP Latin- Latin VII) as I am graduating with a classics diploma. In addition to tutoring for tests and academics, I can help edit essays for both boarding schools and colleges. I have written numerous of my own essays as well as helped friends and older siblings successfully edit their own college application essays and gain admission into top colleges.

I believe that my experiences on opposite ends of the spectrum and everywhere in between have made me a far better tutor than when I was back in middle school, teaching my peers what worked for me instead of taking into consideration important factors such as age, personality, educational environment, and any other unique challenges the student might be facing. I know that every student has different goals regarding what success means for them, whether it be in the classroom or on a test and my goal is to help the students I am tutoring accomplish those goals while having fun, learning underlying strategies that will not just help them with their short term goals, but success throughout their entire academic careers and while minimizing frustration.
