My love of tutoring started during high school and is rooted in my belief that students almost always underestimate their ability to master difficult material in school. In fact, after my high school graduation, I took a gap year to help run an after school tutoring program at a local center for at-risk youth. During college, I joined a student tutoring program and worked with students of all ages (usually helping them with math). In general, I prefer to tutor middle and high school students in math and science, though I'm also happy to provide help with test preparation and the social sciences. In my experience, students who struggle in math focus too much on the "how" of math and not enough on the "why." So, it's my goal to make sure that students understand not only how to complete their assignments and perform well on tests, but also why it is that a formula or a problem works the way it does.
At UNC, I majored in both Sociology and Public Policy and minored in Philosophy. My primary research interest was education policy, which has given me a degree of insight into how students best learn and understand new and difficult subjects. Additionally, my majors prepared me to work with students on reading and writing (I was required to do a great deal of both) as well as math.
As a college student, I worked especially hard to develop my quantitative (math) skills both in my required classes and in graduate level courses in econometrics and statistics. My senior year, I wrote a thesis based on my own research and received highest honors for my work. Additionally, I won the Howard W. Odum award, one of the highly competitive Chancellor's awards for excellence in a particular field of study. Finally, I graduated with highest distinction (GPA > 3.85) and was asked to speak at my departmental graduation. Currently, I'm working doing public health research at a firm in DC. My job includes work with advanced statistical methods, computer programming, and systematic review/meta-analysis.
I'm available after 5 PM on most weeknights and have a flexible schedule on the weekends. I look forward to hearing from you!
