I am currently teaching second grade at Aloma D. Johnson Charter School. In this position, I work diligently to provide students with authentic learning opportunities and respond to academic, emotional and social needs of my students as individuals. Previously, I was teaching a 6-1-2 special education class for third and fourth grade students classified with learning disabilities, other health impairments, and/or emotional disturbances at Henrietta G. Lewis Campus School. In this position, I utilized trauma informed care and structured behavior management. Collaboration with two Teacher’s Assistants and a strong Elementary Team allowed me to create an environment contusive to student learning at differentiated levels. I am experienced in formulating and maintaining accurate records of academic and IEP goal progress for each student. Family involvement is a top priority as I see myself and each child’s parent or guardian as a team that must work cohesively. Therefore, I contact each student’s parent or guardian on a bi-weekly basis as a minimum requirement. Together, we encourage academic, social and behavioral growth to ensure that students can compete academically, leading to success later in life.
I also have experience providing RTI (Response to Intervention) services. As a member of Americorps ABLE program for two years, I served King Center Charter School as a third-grade Intervention Specialist. In this position, I was responsible for planning and implementing Tier 2 academic interventions in English Language Arts and Math to improve student performance. In addition, I provided small group instruction of Math and ELA content to students who showed difficulty within the larger class setting. Collaboration with my supervising teacher was essential to providing parallel instruction. Together, we constructed effective methods of content delivery to increase our students’ retention and performance.
All students are capable of learning and it is my responsibility as a teacher to provide my students with strategies that best suit them as individuals.
