Math And Reading Master - STAAR Strategy Expert AND Solid Foundation Skills

Hi! I am a certified teacher specializing in kinder- 3rd grade students. I have a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Miami University and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. I have taught second, third, and fourth grade over the past 3 years and have taught reading, math, science, and social studies across these grade levels.

Outside of the classroom, I spend my time with my 3 year old daughter. Well, she is almost 3…both of our birthdays are coming up in December! I love to play sports. In high school. I was on the softball, volleyball, and golf teams (my favorite is softball though)! I also enjoy reading, listening to music, and drawing/painting/crafting. I love animals and have a dog (Kain – he’s a boxer) and 2 cats (Meow Meow and Cheezy Poof).

I am an ideal math tutor because I am able to find ways to get the scholars who don’t quite like math to excel in both their confidence and ability levels. I accomplish this by employing a variety of teaching methods for all different learning styles. I create my own math activities (akin to workstations in the formal classroom) and these are relatable to my students and engaging. I have taught math in every grade and am proficient in STAAR test questions and the TEKS. I provide my scholars with a toolkit so they have numerous strategies to pull from when problem solving. Step by step procedures allow them to be confident problem solvers and provide the foundation for high level thinking. It is imperative for scholars to have a firm understanding of the base 10 system to recognize patterns in number relationships. A focus on state testing has rushed past this in the elementary grade levels resulting in a number of students to struggle with concepts built upon this foundation. Unlocking this understanding is all it takes for scholars to become motivated, self-assured mathematicians.

My personal love of reading makes me a successful reading tutor. I am skilled in guiding reading and have consistently increased my students reading levels so that they are on or above level. I am able to do this by ensuring they are reading books at their independent level and on topics that they are genuinely interested in. This ensures that they grow as self-motivated readers because they are challenged but not frustrated. My enthusiasm for reading transfers to my scholars throughout our discussions as I read to them and they read to me. I am very successful at empowering my students with the skills they need to comprehend text, decode vocabulary, infer, predict, and summarize.

I am constantly looking for new, cool science experiments to facilitate with my scholars. Hands on activities are vital to understanding abstract science concepts. This is also a subject where I am very successful in providing my student scientists the tools they need to grow as creative thinkers and also as writers.

Please contact me to set up a meeting. This way we can ensure that I am the best tutor to meet your child’s individual needs. I look forward to meeting you and sharing my lifelong love of learning with your scholar!
