Hi! My name is Katie Rodriguez and I am 18 years old. I graduated from Colonial Forge High School in June 2017 and will be attending George Mason University this coming fall to pursue degrees in International Policy and Sustainability. During my high school career, I worked at our school's Writing Center. The WC was open during select periods during the school day and after school for students of various subjects to come in to be tutored. To become a tutor, I was required to go through two weeks of training by the Writing Center Administrator, Mrs.Lori Hinkley, and studied the 9th Edition of the Bedford Handbook to develop the skill sets to tutor students in writing in MLA and APA format. I also have experience tutoring students in technical, creative, rhetorical, and analytical writing. I enjoy working with students from all ages and skill levels. For example, I have worked with my brother since he was in middle school, who has autism and dyslexia, and also with my peers in the most advanced English courses offered at my high school. My personal study of English includes Honors English 7-10, AP Language and Composition, and AP Literature. My test scores also exemplify how I have succeeded as a student: I scored a perfect score of 600 on my Virginia Standards of Learning Exam for English 11, a perfect score of 5 on my AP Language Exam, a 4 on my AP Literature Exam, and scored a 680 on my Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Score for the SAT, putting me in the 95th percentile in America. Yet, my favorite subjects are social studies, particularly history. I have taken AP World History (scored a 4 on the exam), AP US History (scored a 5 on the exam), and AP Comparative Government (scored a 4 on the exam). I also have teaching experience as Editor-in-Chief of my high school yearbook in which I helped train a staff of 40 plus students in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Google Applications, and Trello. My role also required me to help the staff in their practice of graphic design, journalism, and photography. I would love the opportunity to not only help students improve their grades, but to develop in them the crucial skill to communicate their important ideas effectively.
