It takes Karlla over an hour to get to my house, but she teaches with incomparable effort and energy nonetheless. She sees through my weaknesses very well, and instructs me accordingly. With her singular knowledge of mathematics, she rejects to teach in a typical pattern. Instead, she first explains the basic concept, demonstrates practical ways to tackle each question, encourages me to try applying that concept into more demanding problems, and then improvises related problems on the spot for me to solve. Such natural approach, the fluent process propels my once-frozen thinking skills, and makes me embrace math like a friend. In other words, I get used to math, and then completely make it my own. The qualities an ideal mentor should possess, she satisfies them all. Above all, my biggest gain-I do not feel as a passive recipient like in the past, but an active learner now.
