I've been tutoring a wide variety of subjects for a little over 14 years now. I've worked with students from 1st grade to the doctorate level. I have also taught first-year composition at UW and TA'd first year computer science and engineering courses at Purdue. I have also taught physics, economics, and computer science summer programs for rising high school seniors exploring engineering. This school year, I have been working primarily with a ninth grader in all subjects (with a focus on algebra), a tenth grader in geometry, and several college students in biology, finite math, and first-year composition. Conversely, I spent most of last year working with a first grader on learning how to read and building basic addition skills, two middle schoolers on math and history, and two PhD students on revising their dissertations (in consultation with their committees). I have extensive experience working with international students as well as immigrants in low income communities. I'm also really good with college applications and scholarship essays!
While I've gotten a good education and developed tremendous skill in the subjects I tutor, I also know what it is like to not do well in school and to be confused and how to work through that. I've failed classes in college and turned them into B's the next semester. I really do have a passion for education and building students' confidence. I try really hard to make things relateable and engaging for students – yes I am good with sports metaphors! I play hockey 3-4 times a week, love mountain biking and hiking, and also was that kid in middle school that no one liked…. Shoot me a message if you are interested in finding out if this would be a good fit.
