My background in Reading covers a number of different areas. I have been trained as a Reading Specialist and am also a former HS English Teacher. I have specialized training and am certified through MA General Hospital's Reading Disabilities Clinic to address the reading difficulties of children with dyslexia or of children who, for whatever reason, have difficulty with reading. I have been working with children with these reading difficulties or delays since 2002. Since that time, I have seen many children who have struggled with the foundations of language begin to read with more confidence and facility through the Orton-Gillingham approach. This approach is a multisensory way of teaching reading. In addition to phonological awareness and phonics--essential foundations often missing for dyslexic and other children--reading instruction includes fluency, comprehension, as well as spelling. It is a total instructional experience and one that gives a child with reading difficulties the tools to break the code of English letters and sounds. Some children don’t learn this code without explicit instruction, but when they do, the difference is remarkable!
