I received my Ph.D. in History in 1995 from Washington University (St. Louis). My primary fields of expertise are Modern China, Modern Japan, and American Foreign Policy. My primary focus of research has been 20th-century Chinese nation-building and modernization efforts. I spent seven years in the Republic of China (1982-1984 and 1989-1994), three of which I was working as a consultant for the China External Trade Development Council, which oversaw Taiwan’s foreign investment and trade policy. From 1994 to1999, I taught Chinese and Japanese history at the University of Alabama at Birmingham; and from 1999 to 2006, I taught at Samford University (Birmingham), where I was primarily involved in developing comparative cultural studies and in directing its Asian Studies Program. From 2006 to 2008, I taught at the Air Command and Staff College, Air University, Maxwell AFB in Montgomery (U.S. National Security, International Relations, Leadership in Warfare, and Cultural Studies). I have spent the past five years teaching 11th and 12th-grade history, literature, and writing at Spring Valley School (Birmingham).

In all, I have over thirty years of teaching experience at the secondary, post- secondary, and graduate levels and have taught a wide-range of courses, including Pre-Modern and Modern Asia (China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and India), Western and World Civilization, American History and Literature, U.S. Foreign Relations, Historical Research and Writing, and Comparative Religions and Cultures. Prior to my teaching in the United States, I taught English at Tunghai University (Taichung, Taiwan) (1982-1984) and at Hess Language School (Taipei, Taiwan) (1989-1994).
