I am a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in English Writing. I graduated with honors after studying nonfiction writing, and I currently live in Berkeley, CA.
As a peer tutor at the University of Pittsburgh Writing Center, I assisted undergraduate and graduate students alike in their efforts to produce their best version of writing possible (be it professional, technical, or personal). In addition to working alongside Pitt faculty, peer tutors manage a research topic covering a pedagogical issue in the Writing Center setting, which is presented to staff at the end of the term. My topic covered Student Motivation, and how to approach a passive tutee in the Writing Center Environment.
My time as a peer tutor at the University Writing Center has taught me the importance of active listening and communication. While another may struggle to find the right words or meaning she wishes to convey, I have unearthed and conquered the power of self-expression. Many take words and language for granted, but exercising a robust hold over these and many other aspects of communication have allowed me to not only better understand myself but others, as well. This is what I taught my tutees-- how to acknowledge and embrace their unique thoughts and point of view and communicate this to another through not just written word but speech, as well.
