Michael O

Wheaton, IL

Experienced Math Teacher From K To 12.

As a 2017 graduate of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, I have teaching experience at the middle school and high school levels located in both suburban and rural communities. Currently, I am in the process of completing a master’s degree in Education Policy, Organization, and Leadership from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and I am eager for this chance to expand my opportunities as a professional in the education field.

The teaching philosophy that I seek to portray is that I work to be adaptable, innovative and optimistic when collaborating with students, colleagues, administrators, parents and community members. By participating in various professional mathematics and teaching organizations such as the National Math Honor Society and Epsilon Delta respectively, I have learned that instructional practices cannot remain rigid. On the contrary, I have worked to adapt my teaching style based on input from colleagues to best fit the needs of my students. These developments have enabled me to work in other educational contexts such as a Math Professor’s Assistant at the University of Illinois and a teacher at the Kumon Math and Reading Center.

I believe my teaching experience and passion for community engagement will enable me to be an ideal candidate for teaching. Being an Eagle Scout and a frequent volunteer in both educational and noneducational organizations, community engagement plays a large role in my professional involvement within a school district. As a student teacher, I gained a great deal of experience differentiating my instruction to fit the diverse needs of my students, namely those with Individualized Education Programs and 504 Plans. To provide a more comprehensive learning for my students, I chose to implement a flipped classroom through the use of such tools as Google Classroom, Quizizz and IXL. I regularly strive to engage students in the larger community by encouraging involvement outside of the classroom.
