Inver Grove Heights, MN
Elementary Reading And Math Instructor
My current MN teaching license is for Elementary and Special Education, with a license for Specific Learning Disabilities and Cognitive and Developmental Delays. I have 38 years of full time teaching experience in Special Education and have taught over 1000 children how to read proficiently, students who were unsuccessful and grade levels behind in skills in the mainstream classroom. I retired from teaching to be with my mother who was ill, and she has passed away. I was a nanny last year, but I feel a tug at my heart when I read about younger children who are struggling with academics.
I love teaching reading, showing students their strengths and teaching them the skills they need to be successful. I know how to quickly analyze a student's skill set, and have mastered a variety of methods to 'fill in the gaps'. I have been trained in Orton Gillingham, and was using a very similar program before that training. OG is a cornerstone for a solid reading foundation. I have also learned over the years ways to engage the most challenging of passive (and active) resisters.
Without actively looking, I have received requests to take full time teaching positions. I have a new granddaughter that I will nanny for 2 days a week starting in 2017. I am not looking for full time positions.
