Hi, I'm Mike. I'm a patient and supportive teacher who has been tutoring for ten years, and I use positive encouragement throughout all phases of working with you or your child. I’m not only experienced with math and computers, but I’ve been using mindfulness in teaching since 2006, so I can break problems down into easy steps and teach you how to be unafraid of mistakes or confusion when you try new ideas.
Learning is a creative process. Even in math, it draws on your imagination and intuition, not just memorizing rules. I can make math simpler for you or your child, and make all those formulas easier to remember.
I can untangle math for students who struggle. Many students first encounter math concepts in school as a jumble of separate ideas thrown together, and sometimes schools have unrealistic expectations about how quickly a student can pick it up. For your child, I can break down these ideas into individual steps and give targeted practice exercises to increase their skill.
A little about me: I have always loved math and computers. In high school I took a math contest and finished in the top 100 nationally. I majored in computer science at Caltech and went on to work for NASA as a programmer. In 2006, I took a 500 hour training course in the use of mindfulness in teaching, and I love applying its surprising ideas to teaching and learning.
