Teacher Who Believes "The World Needs All Kinds Of Minds"
I'm a certified special educator, and I am a firm believer that in activist Temple Grandin's quote, "The world needs all kinds of minds." I specialize in teaching children that learn differently. This includes students with: ADD/ADHD, Learning Disabilities, or Autism Spectrum Disorder.
General education is designed to meet the needs of the majority of students. I provide one-on-one attention to students that have not been successful with the grade-level curriculum.
The first thing you will notice about me is that I am passionate about what I do. I love to teach, and my enthusiasm can be contagious. I am also skilled at breaking down difficult concepts into simple steps.
Math is my favorite subject to tutor. As a child, math classes were always a challenge for me. Surprisingly, it all started to make more sense AFTER I started teaching! That is why I give students the opportunity to "be the teacher" & teach concepts they've learned to someone else during the session. It could be a parent, sibling, or me! It's a great way to assess their understanding of a concept as well as build confidence.
Some of my favorite math apps/sites to use in tutoring include: XtraMath, Quizlet, ThatQuiz, GoConqr.
When it comes to writing, I think an essential aspect is organization. Whether I am working with a kindergartener or a college student, I always emphasize having an outline beforehand.
When I work with students with disabilities, I highlight their strengths and work on building confidence. These students have become so familiar with failure that often they lose motivation. I work on confidence building so that they believe in their ability to succeed.
